Councillor Allen, who has represented the Bessacarr ward in Doncaster since 2015, announced his selection as candidate for the constituency last week.

He has worked in the office of Nick Fletcher, Conservative MP for the former Don Valley constituency, since his election in 2019.

In May, he ran for Mayor of South Yorkshire, coming in second to Labour Mayor Oliver Coppard with 16.49 percent of the vote share.

Coun Allen said:

“I am always keen to support Doncaster in any way I can. If I am elected as Doncaster Central’s first Conservative MP since Tony Barber I will base my constituency office in the city centre.

“It is no good being cooped up in an ivory tower somewhere and I want to be an accessible MP.

People want to see their MP and an office based in the city centre would also help breathe some new life back into our High Street!

“There is some wonderful, beautiful, regency architecture in Doncaster! Just look at Bennetthorpe and Regent Square! It needs to be kept that way, preserved and supported.

“Whenever I speak to people I am amazed at how many are actually frightened to go into the town centre and yet, sadly, our Labour politicians do nothing about the problem.

“I know one office might not make much of a difference but it would, perhaps, help send a message that Nick Allen is actually conscientious enough to support the town he represents.

“We need to back our town and speak up the positives!”

Coun Allen is one of six candidates who will stand in the Doncaster Central constituency.

It was previously represented by Labour MP Dame Rosie Winterton, from 1997 until her retirement last month.

Her registered constituency address was the Doncaster Trades and Labour Club in the Frenchgate shopping centre.

Dame Winterton’s former campaign agent Sally Jameson will now stand as Labour candidate in the constituency.
