An e-fit image released by South Yorkshire police after an attempted robbery in Doncaster has gone viral after eagle-eyed Twitter and Facebook users likened the suspect to comedian David Walliams.

And it looks as though the ‘suspect’ has come forward as a result.

Posting on Twitter, Walliams wrote: “I think it may be me” above a picture of the man police want to speak to. Although one user doubted his confession, replying: “Computer says no.”

The police showed their funny side by asking the children’s author to come and pay a visit to their officers, as they are still looking for the actual suspect.

The force say a 70-year-old man was getting into his car on Duke Street after visiting a local jewellers when he was approached by a man who attempted to steal his property.

The victim managed to fend off the would-be robber and drove off.
